The Ultimate Braai pie – Living Delish
The Ultimate Braai Pie? Now, that sounds like a South African treat! Here’s a recipe inspired by the idea:
Ultimate Braai Pie:
Ingredients:
For the Filling:
- 1 pound beef or lamb mince
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup mixed vegetables (carrots, peas, corn)
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Olive oil for cooking
For the Pastry:
- 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed if frozen
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
Instructions:
- Preheat your braai (barbecue) or oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a pan on the braai or stovetop, heat a bit of olive oil. Sauté the chopped onions until translucent, then add minced garlic and cook until fragrant.
- Add the mince to the pan and brown it, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
- Once the meat is browned, add the mixed vegetables, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Cook until the vegetables are tender and the mixture is well combined. Set aside.
- Roll out one sheet of puff pastry on a lightly floured surface. Place it on a baking sheet or a piece of foil for the braai.
- Spoon the meat mixture onto one half of the pastry, leaving a border around the edges.
- Roll out the second sheet of puff pastry and place it over the filling. Press the edges to seal the pie.
- If you’re using a braai, wrap the pie in foil and place it on the braai grid. Cook for about 25-30 minutes or until the pastry is golden and the filling is hot.
- If you’re using an oven, brush the top of the pie with beaten egg for a shiny finish. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until the pastry is golden and flaky.
- Allow the braai pie to cool for a few minutes before slicing.
Enjoy this ultimate braai pie with the flavors of the South African outdoors!
