Geera Pepper Shrimp

Geera pepper shrimp is a flavorful and spicy dish that originates from Trinidad and Tobago. It’s typically made with shrimp marinated in a blend of spices, including geera (cumin), pepper, garlic, and other seasonings. Here’s a recipe for you to try:

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 2 tablespoons ground geera (cumin)
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon ground white pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 scotch bonnet pepper or habanero pepper, seeded and thinly sliced (adjust to taste for spiciness)
  • Fresh cilantro or parsley for garnish (optional)
  • Lime wedges for serving

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground geera, black pepper, white pepper, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, dried thyme, and salt.
  2. Add the peeled and deveined shrimp to the bowl and toss until they are evenly coated with the spice mixture. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  3. In a large skillet or frying pan, heat the olive oil and butter over medium-high heat.
  4. Add the minced garlic and sliced onion to the pan and sauté until the onion is softened and translucent, about 2-3 minutes.
  5. Add the sliced scotch bonnet pepper to the pan and cook for another minute, stirring frequently.
  6. Carefully add the marinated shrimp to the skillet in a single layer, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until the shrimp are pink and opaque.
  7. Once the shrimp are cooked through, remove the skillet from the heat.
  8. Garnish the geera pepper shrimp with fresh cilantro or parsley, if desired, and serve hot with lime wedges on the side.
  9. Enjoy your flavorful and spicy geera pepper shrimp as a delicious appetizer or main dish, served with rice, roti, or your favorite side dishes!

Feel free to adjust the amount of spice according to your taste preferences. Enjoy!
