Karine de Souza is acutely aware of this. As a result of an exceptional skin condition, this Brazilian woman has had to apply SPF100 sunscreen all over her skin, even while indoors, for her entire life.

The 33 years old has Xeroderma Pigmentosum, a condition that puts her at a high risk for developing skin cancer.

Due to her rare and incurable “one in a million” condition, she is highly susceptible to UV rays and incapable of repairing any skin damage caused by the sun. Even a few minutes of exposure to the sun can result in excruciating sunburns. As a child, she was often confined to her home since it was too dangerous for her to spend prolonged periods outdoors.

She shared, “I don’t experience any immediate sensations when I expose myself to light, but the lesions do emerge later and necessitate excision due to malignancy.”

Karine has undertaken 130 surgical procedures, including the amputation of her lower lip and a piece of her nose, to eliminate sores brought on by the sun.

However, she has to go through more than just a physical struggle. Karine frequently receives strange looks while walking down the street and has endured online and offline verbal abuse.

Through social media, she met Edmilson, her husband, who fell in love with her “story and her strength.” Edmilson knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life with Karine because he has always been by her side.

His sincere remarks and the lovely pictures he took of Karine and Edmilson went viral, and thousands of people left messages of congratulations for the happy couple.
