Ingredients:

INGREDIENTS QUANTITY
Ground beef (80/20 blend recommended) 1 pound
Rye bread 8 slices
Swiss cheese 8 thin slices
Yellow onion (thinly sliced) 1 large
Unsalted butter (softened) 4 tablespoons
Worcestershire sauce (optional) 1 teaspoon (adds depth, optional)
Salt To taste
Pepper To taste
Thousand Island dressing (optional) For serving (adds a tangy kick, optional)

Instructions::

  1. Shape the Patties:
    • Take 1 pound of ground beef and shape it into four oval patties.
    • Season each patty with salt, pepper, and optionally, 1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce for added depth.
  2. Cook the Patties:
    • Heat a skillet over medium-high heat.
    • Cook the beef patties for about 4 minutes per side or until they reach your desired doneness.
    • Set aside once cooked.
  3. Caramelize the Onions:
    • In the same skillet, reduce the heat to medium.
    • Add a bit of butter if needed and cook one large thinly sliced yellow onion until caramelized, stirring occasionally. This takes about 10 minutes.
  4. Prep the Bread:
    • Butter one side of each of the 8 slices of rye bread. These buttered sides will be the outer part of your sandwich, achieving that golden-brown toast upon cooking.
  5. Assemble & Cook:
    • Clear the skillet and assemble the Patty Melts: Place the bread (buttered side down), a slice of Swiss cheese, caramelized onions, beef patty, another slice of cheese, and top with another slice of bread (buttered side up).
    • Cook over medium heat until each side is golden and the cheese melts, about 3 minutes per side.
  6. Serve Warm:
    • Once cooked, serve the Patty Melts warm.
    • Cut in half to showcase the melted layers.
    • Optionally, offer Thousand Island dressing on the side for an extra flavor dimension.
