The Ultimate Braai pie – Living Delish

The Ultimate Braai Pie? Now, that sounds like a South African treat! Here’s a recipe inspired by the idea:

Ultimate Braai Pie:

Ingredients:

For the Filling:

  • 1 pound beef or lamb mince
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup mixed vegetables (carrots, peas, corn)
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Olive oil for cooking

For the Pastry:

  • 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed if frozen
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your braai (barbecue) or oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a pan on the braai or stovetop, heat a bit of olive oil. Sauté the chopped onions until translucent, then add minced garlic and cook until fragrant.
  3. Add the mince to the pan and brown it, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
  4. Once the meat is browned, add the mixed vegetables, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Cook until the vegetables are tender and the mixture is well combined. Set aside.
  1. Roll out one sheet of puff pastry on a lightly floured surface. Place it on a baking sheet or a piece of foil for the braai.
  2. Spoon the meat mixture onto one half of the pastry, leaving a border around the edges.
  3. Roll out the second sheet of puff pastry and place it over the filling. Press the edges to seal the pie.
  4. If you’re using a braai, wrap the pie in foil and place it on the braai grid. Cook for about 25-30 minutes or until the pastry is golden and the filling is hot.
  1. If you’re using an oven, brush the top of the pie with beaten egg for a shiny finish. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until the pastry is golden and flaky.
  2. Allow the braai pie to cool for a few minutes before slicing.

Enjoy this ultimate braai pie with the flavors of the South African outdoors!
